Vacation

August 13th, 2009 by Shane Kenny | No Comments | Filed in Work

I have been on a knowledge quest for the past several months.  I think I have read more books in the last 3 months than I have since I graduated from college.  But, sometimes the things you learn are not from a book you read but simply by living life.

This week I learned the importance of time off.  I don’t mean time off where you stay home and try to get as many items as you can off the honey-do list.  I don’t mean taking the family to Disney World or some other vacation destination where you have to entertain and chase the kids all over the place.  I mean time off.  Time doing nothing other than relaxing.

The 3 days that I spent on the beach with Heather in Miami taught me this lesson.  I have returned to work ready to tackle any problem and with a renewed energy to get things done and finish the year strong.  I think I have honestly gotten more done in the last week that I did in the previous month.

If have that feeling that you are just “punching the clock” and waiting for 5:00 to roll around every afternoon so you can leave it may be time for a break.  I recommend a beach with no kids somewhere.

McAfee Family Protection

June 3rd, 2009 by Shane Kenny | 4 Comments | Filed in Work

It is finally here!  After nearly 8 months of work, McAfee Family Protection went live at about 10:30pm (EST) yesterday night.  The official press release went out this morning at 8:00am (EST).  The first question that should be on your mind is why I am I so excited about not only a competitive product but a competitive product from one of the “big guys”?  The answer is simple… McAfee Family Protection is developed by, powered by, and managed by InternetSafety.com.  For all intents and purposes it is the InternetSafety.com technology being used under another name.

I would be remiss if I did not say thanks to all the people at InternetSafety.com that put countless hours into making this happen.  Everyone from the CEO down to the customer service team had some part in getting this product to market.  The real heavy lifting fell to our R&D team and the guys there did an awesome job working with McAfee’s product team to get the product ready.  So, today we celebrate.  Tomorrow?  Tomorrow, we get back to work!

BetStopper

June 1st, 2009 by Shane Kenny | No Comments | Filed in Work

This week I get to finally talk about a couple of projects that we have been working hard on at InternetSafety.com for the last several months.  The first is a project called BetStopper that has been developed through an agreement with the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation.

BetStopper is the only product that I am aware of that has the laser-focus of preventing underage youth from gambling online.  It is being given away free-of-charge to residents of Nova Scotia as part of the province’s social responsibility in gaming initiative.  If you live in Nova Scotia, and are interested in this product, you can learn more at www.betstopper.ca.

BetStopper is another example of the award winning technology that powers Safe Eyes being re-used in a unique, and interesting way.

Context Switching

April 14th, 2009 by Shane Kenny | 2 Comments | Filed in Work

For the non-computer geek a quick lesson on computer architecture:  Context switching is a process used to make sure that a single program does not monopolize your computer’s processor.  Each application is given a time slice, if the end of the time slice is reached that application has to release the processor and allow another application to use it.  The “interrupted” application then gets back in line to wait its turn to use the processor again.  (Learn more)

It occurred to me on the drive home this afternoon that my day typically consists on one context switch after another.  I am working along on something when an email arrives that steals my attention.  I then put down what I was working on to take care of the email.  While I am answering that email I get a reminder that I am supposed to be in a meeting.  So, I leave the email half completed and go to the meeting.  It never fails that the meeting runs into lunch so I go from the meeting to lunch.  Upon returning from lunch I start to work on the new things I have to do based on the pre-lunch meeting.  Then the phone rings.  After the call I realize I never finished the email I started before lunch.  By the end of the day I am back to trying to complete the task I started the day with before I go home.

Maybe I am just an uber-geek to think of my life in computer terms but it was interesting none-the-less.  Maybe I will change my name to Shane “Windows XP” Kenny.  In this case I will want rename all the to-dos on my list “svchost” since for some reason this process can ignore the common context switching rules and hog the processor.  Maybe this way I would feel like I am getting something done!
