Running Update

June 27th, 2009 by Shane Kenny | No Comments | Filed in Running

Yes, I am still running and exercising.  In fact, this week consisted of:

  • Sunday: Soccer (3 miles)
  • Monday: Weights and Stationary Bike (30 minutes, 9 miles)
  • Tuesday: Run 3.21 miles
  • Wednesday: Weights and Run/Walk 4 miles
  • Thursday: Off
  • Friday: Run 4.1 miles
  • Saturday: Mow plus 3 hours at pool

I was planning to do the weights and run 6 miles today, but it just did not work out as planned.  Still, 14.3 miles running and 9 biking is a pretty good week.

I am starting to look at marathons again.  I have my eye on the Las Vegas Marathon on December 6th.  If anyone is interested in running with me or just coming along to hang in Vegas for a few days let me know.  I am thinking of heading out with Heather on December 4th and coming back December 8th.  Four nights in Vegas is about all I can take.

Friday Firsts

Daddy’s Country Kitchen

4525 S. Main Street
Acworth, GA 30101

Daddy’s country Kitchen is located on Main Street in Acworth just north of the old Day’s Chevrolet buildings in the parking lot of of the Save-A-Lot grocery store.  (Google Street View)

This is one of those places that you will drive by a hundred times before you actually get up the courage to go in and try it out.  The building is run-down, the signage is dated, and the place has remained unchanged longer than you have been in Acworth.

When you step inside the front door you will see the buffet line immediately to your left.  I have been told that the items on the buffet change daily.  On this particular Friday there was: a small salad bar, green beans, brussel sprouts, potatoes, stuffing & gravy, fried fish, fried chicken, hush puppies, and peach cobbler.

Overall the food was average.  The salad bar was a nice option but other than lettuce, cheese, onions, and few dressing choices there was little choice in customizing your salad.  The fried chicken was decent and the potatoes and green beans were cooked well but submerged in butter.  On the other hand, the hush puppies were excellent, prompting a second trip to the buffet for more.  I think the $7 (plus tip) price tag was a fair price for my lunch there.

While Daddy’s Country Kitchen will not become a regular lunch place for me I would urge everyone to try it out at least once… especially if you are really hungry.  It has that southern, out-of-the-way, home cooked feel that you won’t find in many restaurants these days.  Plus, it is a great conversation starter in Acworth when you tell people you have eaten there.

Dalls Dash

June 20th, 2009 by Shane Kenny | No Comments | Filed in Running

I ran the Dallas Dash 5k this morning in Dallas, GA.  I was hoping to improve on my 24:55 PR from the last 5k I ran.  In the end, the heat and hills took their toll and I ended up walking 2 sections for a total of 3 minutes.  I finished 2nd in my age group with a time of 25:46.  Here is the data from my watch (click image to view full size):

Since I have started placing in my age group at these smaller races I stick around for the awards ceremony.  Today I heard some funny comments from other runners that were standing around.  By far, the funniest was, “My time is slower by 14 minutes this year.  I guess that is what happens when you get married and become a pastor.”  I didn’t realize the being overweight was a qualification for being a pastor.  I’ll need to have a few words with my pastor and let him know that he needs to make a few more trips the buffet this week!!

Oyster Cafe

3060 Cobb Pkwy #101
Kennesaw, GA 30152

770.529.2197

The Oyster Cafe is located on Cobb Parkway south of the “old” Walmart.  If your coming north on Cobb Parkway it will be on your right.  If you are coming south on Cobb Parkway you will want to turn left on Blue Springs road and make a right just before the day care center.  Otherwise you will have to drive halfway to Kennesaw in order to turn around and come north.

The first thing I noticed when I walked in was that it had a Chinese buffet-style feel.  Not sure why, it may have been the layout, the style of table, or the pictures of the food hanging on the wall when you walked in.  Don’t get me wrong the place was clean it just had that feel to it.

The second thing I noticed was that everything on the lunch menu was fried.  For someone that is trying to lose some weight, and watch what I eat, there was not really a “better” choice.  I ended up choosing to try the fried oyster sandwich since we were at the Oyster Cafe.  I can’t comment on the oysters since this is the first time I have them.  What I can say though is that a fried oyster sandwich is a little clumsy to eat.

There are some non-fried options on the menu if you want to stray into the $12 to $14 range for lunch.  By staying on the lunch menu and drinking water my lunch was $7.37 plus tip.

Will I go back?  I may be willing to try the dinner menu at some point if I am out with the wife and no kids.  For lunch, I would pass.

Facebook Username

So I did not try to log on to Facebook at 12:01 this morning to claim my username.  I figured I would get what I get and would be happy with it.  I was pleased to find that nearly 12 hours later that “shane.kenny” was still available.  If you want to find me on Facebook, you can now go to www.facebook.com/shane.kenny.  Maybe some old friends in real life will become new friends on Facebook and I will finally have more Facebook friends than Heather.
